FAQs

I accept custom orders on a limited basis. Please send inquiries about custom orders to melodie@melodiegrace.com.

All of my pieces are created through Japanese pit firing, a technique that yields wonderfully unpredictable results. I use both smoke and flame to influence the outcome of each pot.
To produce copper raku, I use actual copper in the glaze. The copper reacts to the reduction technique resulting in the variety of color you see.
For black and white raku, I use either traditional or naked raku firing techniques to color my pieces with smoke.

The care of your new piece depends on the type of piece.
Porcelain and stoneware pieces are food, microwave, and dishwasher safe and are suitable for both decorative or daily functional wear. Pieces finished with gold luster are food safe but should not be placed in a microwave or dishwasher.
Raku pottery is for decorative use only. These pieces are not food-safe or watertight. To preserve the color and character of your piece, avoid placing it in direct sunlight. To clean, simply dust with a clean, dry cloth.
All jewelry is handmade of porcelain. Porcelain is durable and washable. Clean your pieces with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or cotton swab. To extend the life of your handmade item, don't wear when swimming, bathing, or sleeping. All earrings are made with titanium posts and nylon claps so they're hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive ears.

Raku is a Japanese pit firing process.
-
Because raku pottery is fired at a low temperature, the surface of the piece remains porous. This makes raku pottery suitable for decorative use only. Raku pottery is not food-safe or watertight.
-
No. All the motifs on my raku pottery pieces are done free-hand and colored with smoke trapped during the firing process. Each piece is unique.
-
I etch the design the design through a slip and glaze resist layer. The coloring comes from smoke trapped during the raku firing process.
-
Traditional raku pieces have a shiny glaze somewhere on the piece. Naked raku pieces are matte, with no glaze, and are created with a resist process.
-
Copper raku has actual copper in the glaze. The copper reacts in the firing process to create the variation in color.
